Baseline load testing establishes the normal performance characteristics of your system under typical production traffic levels. You replay or simulate traffic patterns that match your average workday load and measure response times, throughput, error rates, and resource utilization. The results become your performance baseline, which you compare against when making changes. Run baseline tests regularly to detect performance regressions early.

Stress testing pushes the system beyond normal operating conditions to find its breaking point. You gradually increase load until the system starts degrading: response times spike, error rates climb, or the system becomes unresponsive. Stress testing answers the question "how much traffic can we handle before things break?" and reveals which component fails first, whether that is the application server running out of threads, the database hitting connection limits, or the load balancer reaching its throughput ceiling.

Soak testing, also called endurance testing, applies a moderate load over an extended period, typically 12 to 72 hours. The goal is to uncover issues that only manifest over time: memory leaks, connection pool exhaustion, log disk filling up, certificate expiration, or database table bloat. These time-dependent failures are invisible in short test runs but can cause production outages during sustained operation.

Spike testing subjects the system to sudden, dramatic increases in load. Instead of gradually ramping up, you jump from baseline to two or three times normal traffic within seconds. This simulates real-world events like a product launch, marketing campaign, or viral social media moment. Spike testing reveals how quickly your auto-scaling responds and whether the system can handle the burst before new capacity comes online.

Volume testing focuses on data size rather than request rate. It validates that the system handles large datasets correctly: what happens when a database table has a billion rows, when a message queue has a million pending messages, or when a log file reaches the disk limit. Volume testing is especially important for batch processing systems and data pipelines.
