Scaling is the process of increasing a system's capacity to handle more load. The two fundamental approaches are vertical scaling, which means making individual machines bigger, and horizontal scaling, which means adding more machines. Each has distinct advantages and constraints.

Vertical scaling, or scaling up, involves increasing the resources of an existing instance: more CPU cores, more RAM, faster storage. If your database server has 16 GB of RAM and is hitting memory limits, you upgrade to 64 GB. Vertical scaling is operationally simple because the application architecture does not change. You have one instance doing the same work, just with more resources. This makes it attractive for stateful workloads like databases where distributing state across multiple nodes introduces significant complexity.

However, vertical scaling has hard limits. There is a maximum instance size available from any cloud provider, and costs increase non-linearly as you move to larger instance types. A machine with double the CPU often costs more than double the price. Additionally, vertical scaling provides no redundancy: your single larger instance is still a single point of failure.

Horizontal scaling, or scaling out, adds more instances of the application behind a load balancer. If one web server handles 1,000 requests per second, adding four more gives you roughly 5,000 requests per second of capacity. Horizontal scaling offers near-linear capacity growth and built-in redundancy, since the failure of one instance is absorbed by the others.

The challenge with horizontal scaling is that the application must be designed for it. Stateless services scale horizontally with ease because any instance can handle any request. Stateful services require more thought. Session state must be externalized to a shared store like Redis. File uploads must go to shared storage like S3 rather than local disk. Database writes typically cannot be horizontally scaled by simply adding replicas, which is why database scaling often combines vertical scaling for the primary with horizontal read replicas.

Several factors guide the choice. Application architecture is the primary consideration: is the workload stateless or stateful? Cost profile matters: horizontal scaling is generally more cost-effective at large scale because you use many commodity instances rather than a few expensive ones. Speed of scaling is important: in Kubernetes, horizontal scaling via adding pods takes seconds, while vertical scaling requires restarting pods. Failure tolerance favors horizontal scaling because losing one of ten instances affects only ten percent of capacity.

In practice, most modern architectures use horizontal scaling for application tiers and a combination of vertical scaling plus read replicas for database tiers. Kubernetes makes horizontal scaling the default with Horizontal Pod Autoscalers that automatically adjust replica count based on CPU, memory, or custom metrics. The Vertical Pod Autoscaler exists as well but is less commonly used because resizing pods requires restarts.

The most common pattern I see is to right-size instances vertically first, ensuring each pod has appropriate CPU and memory requests and limits, and then scale horizontally based on demand. This avoids the waste of many under-utilized instances while providing the flexibility to handle variable traffic.
